Recently, during our leadership summit week in Tierra Verde, FL, we had the opportunity to volunteer with Tampa Bay Watch, participating in their Community Oyster Reef Enhancement (CORE) program.
About the CORE Program
As part of the CORE program, we joined forces with Tampa Bay Watch to create oyster reef balls, a solution aimed at stabilizing shorelines and preventing erosion while fostering natural habitats. These reef balls, constructed using marine-friendly concrete and a blend of other components, weigh approximately 200 lbs. each. They are strategically placed in areas with high wave energy to combat erosion along Tampa Bay’s natural shorelines.
The Impact of Oyster Reef Balls
The beauty of oyster reef balls lies not only in their ability to prevent erosion but also in their capacity to mimic natural oyster communities. With many nooks and crannies, they attract oyster larvae, creating an ecosystem that enhances biodiversity and prevents further habitat degradation.
A Hands-On Approach
From crafting the reef balls on Tampa Bay Watch’s property to transporting them to the project site and finally installing them along the shoreline, we were a part of every step of the process!
