The Problem with a Traditional Cable Caddy

Most competitive spool systems mount the fiber directly inside the NID. That setup forces the fiber into a sharp 90° bend the moment it enters the house—putting tension on the cable, risking damage to the jacket, and increasing the likelihood of signal loss or future service calls.

“Originally, people came to us with solutions that our competition had made — the spool would spin inside the NID,” explains Bryan Hughes, Vice President of Sales at Precision Group, “and what they found was that it was not optimal for installations because immediately the fiber had to make a 90-degree bend to go into the house.”

The Precision Cable Spool Caddy was designed to fix that—allowing for a smoother, more controlled pull that keeps the fiber protected and the process simple.

The Precision Group Cable Caddy: Built for Fiber to the Home

This fiber optic cable caddy was developed with real-world input from broadband installers, and every feature has a purpose. The design came down to a handful of very specific requests from the field—practical details that make installations faster and easier:

  • A bright red color, so it’s easy to spot in the yard
  • Slotted yard stakes to secure the caddy or guide fiber around corners, hills, or roof eaves
  • A brake system to keep the fiber from spinning out of control
  • Support for two spools

Smarter Fiber Routing with Dual-Use Stakes

The included stakes are tools for smarter fiber routing. “Customers asked if we could make the top of the yard stakes slotted so they could either stake them in the ground around corners of the house or even up in the eaves of the roof, allowing them to route fiber as they pulled it around the home. So we did that,” Hughes says.

This gives field crews the flexibility to handle odd angles, uneven terrain, or complex drop paths—without pulling tension.

Controlled Pulls with Brake Support

Overspin during a fiber pull is annoying; it can lead to fiber tangles, damage, or costly do-overs. That’s why the Cable Spool Caddy includes an integrated braking system that applies just enough tension to control the feed. This feature helps techs work clean and efficiently—especially on long or multi-spool runs.

Built-In Slack Storage = Faster Installs

Forget hand-looping slack into a fiber enclosure. With the Precision cable caddy system, any unused length stays on the spool—and gets snapped directly into the NID lid post-install.

“They pull it off the Cable Spool Caddy,” notes Hughes, “they bring the spool up, and they twist it in, and the spool has all the slack already on it, so it saves a lot of labor.”

It’s fast, clean, and it saves time at every stage of the install.

With the Cable Caddy, the Warehouse Wins Too

The Cable Spool Caddy also reduces complexity for your warehouse team and truck inventory. Instead of stocking ten different jumper lengths, companies are switching to one or two pre-spooled options.

“Let’s say it’s 150 feet,” Hughes explains. “You just put it onto the cable caddy, pull it into the home, and the spool holds the slack.” That means fewer SKUs, less room for error and an easier path to job-ready kitting.
