What do you love about the Broadband industry?
We do it right. The service providers in this industry strive incredibly hard to serve their customers with near perfect reliability. I mean we arent NASA or Airplane perfect…but were pretty close. I left the industry for a short time years ago and found it frustrating working to a lesser standard. Looking at my desk right now…it appears maybe I should set a higher personal standard…sheesh.
How has the industry evolved over your career, looking back what is most surprising?
Hah…I’ve been around a little while now. Data was analog, we didn’t even have bag phones yet (google that young whippersnappers), printers were dot matrix and switches still made noise. Maybe I should be most surprised that they still let me play! I guess mainly, as a critical facilities guy at my core, that I’m surprised at just how much we can get done in such a small space. What used to take an entire building now takes a single cabinet.
What does your favorite Saturday look like?
Get up early, first cup of coffee on the deck with the dogs. Ride the tandem with Lisa to the coffee shop for an insanely good espresso and a ham and cheese croissant. Long lazy ride to lunch then home for a nap. If all that happens in Paris, or Lisbon or Montreal…all the better.
What hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
My wife and I are avid tandem bikers, using our bike as transportation and recreation every chance we get. I’m a semi-avid homebrewer, even brewing a keg or two every year with hops I grow myself. Our brewery even has a name, Bungalow Peak, and a logo. Ask me nice maybe I’ll give you a sticker.
Tell us something about yourself people may not know?
Don’t tell anyone…ok? I’m a closet A’Capella music fan and a not so closet Rush fan. I’d pay big $$$ for an album of Geddy Lee singing all four parts in a barbershop quartet.
What was your 10 year-old-self’s dream job?
I wanted to be one of the firefighters on Emergency (That’s like Chicago Fire or Engine 19, only 40 years ago). But..I wanted my theme song to be from Hawaii Five O.
Why are you excited for your new role as Specialty Projects Manager at Precision Group?
Is this a test? It’s way too late for interview questions now. I’m yours! I guess mainly, I’m looking forward to another chance to learn some new things, specifically about manufacturing and the product lifecycle. In return, I can apply my past experience to contribute to PG’s already exceptional team culture of serving the industry. Maybe I’ll even get to teach a little…you never know.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
I have a pile of them…”Think”, “He who does not gather, Scatters”, “You can’t fix stupid”, “Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”, “Happy Friday”…clearly…my personal motto is not “focus!”.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
“Well, THAT was highly non-sucking!”.
